CONCUSSION RECOMMENDATIONS FOR SCHOOL ATHLETES
1. All athletes should have baseline cognitive testing each year. Although the absence of baseline testing does not negate the value of post-injury testing, it is ideal.
2. After medical evaluation for concussion, an initial cognitive test should be done in 2-3 days.
3. Cognitive testing should be repeated when concussive symptoms resolve or in 1 week. Subsequent testing is on a case-by-case basis until recovered.
4. Athletes need both physical and cognitive rest to facilitate the fastest recovery. The athlete may return to school when symptom free (e.g. headache, fatigue) but may need modifications regarding homework, testing etc. until recovered. Cognitive “work” may cause symptoms to return and slow recovery. Physical activity should be advanced in a step-wise fashion based on symptoms and the athlete may return to play when medically and cognitively recovered.
