NEWBORN SCREENING TESTS
The State of Texas Newborn Screening Program checks all newborn babies for certain metabolic disorders. These screening tests are very important for your baby’s health. Your newborn will be tested first in the hospital, at approx. 24 hours of age and again in our office after the baby is at least 7 days old.
The State of Texas screens for approximately 27 disorders. Because this testing is required for all newborns born in Texas, most insurance plans provide coverage. In addition, our office offers supplemental testing to screen for disorders which are not covered in the state testing. These additional tests are provided by private companies (Baylor and Pediatrix) and are not covered by insurance. Click here for a spreadsheet which names the different disorders and which screening tests cover them. Some overlap exists between all of the tests.
The Baylor Supplemental Screen is available for a charge of $60 and covers approximately 19 additional disorders. The Pediatrix screen covers 18 of those disorders as well as screening for Cystic Fibrosis and G6PD. The cost for the Pediatrix Screen is $125. Because of the overlap, parents may choose to elect either the Baylor or Pediatrix screen in addition to the Texas screen. Click here for frequently asked questions about newborn screens.
